B.R.A.I.N is a common acronym used in the birth field although it can be applied to healthcare in general. I also use it when I go to the doctor myself or when my kids are sick. Typically, you’ll want to use your “BRAIN” when evaluating various treatment options, interventions, and/or drugs.
Remember you may have more options than the one your care provider suggests.
The facility or practice your part of may routinely offer one method and it’s your job as an advocate of your own health to make sure you understand any, and all, options available to make the best choice for you and your family.
B = What are the benefits?
R = What are the risks?
A = Are there any alternatives?
I = Intuition; What does your gut tell you?
N= What if we do nothing? Do we have time to make a decision in an hour, a day, a week?
When you’re in active labor, however, it can be hard to use your logical brain. Actually, it is counterproductive in the birthing process when it’s important to be in touch with your raw instinctual nature.
That’s one reason why having support of a birth doula can be sooo beneficial!
